Vietnam has timeless charm with so many scenic spots such as the largest cave in the world, the most beautiful beach in Asia, a melting pot of cultures, a rich culinary background; however, the volume of tourists coming to Vietnam in 2015 only stopped at 7,943,651 millions, contributing 18.05 billion to the national budget. What do we need to do for developing tourism in Vietnam?
Vietnam with timeless charm is waiting for effective investment and exploitation.
The year 2015 recorded remarkable figures of the tourism industry of countries in the Southeast Asia region. The number of tourists visiting the Philippines reached 5,360,682 contributing 30.95 billion USD to the national budget while Thailand welcomed 29.8 million guests contributing to its national budget an amount of $ 58.72 billion USD. As compared to those countries, the numbers achieved by Vietnam tourism industry is still modest as its full potential has not been fully exploited.
According to a recent report by Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), Vietnam tourism industry in the first 10 months of 2016 achieved a milestone of 9 million foreign tourists, increased 25.4% as compared to the same period last year, reaching approximately 92.8% of the 2016 Plan. International visitors from most of the markets have increased, in which the growth of tourist quantity from Asia is most notable, led by the number of visitors from Hong Kong (China) and Korea. The European market also contributed a significant increase of international tourists coming to Vietnam with an increased number of guests from Russia, Italy and Spain by nearly 1/3. Vietnam has many places that were and are attractive to foreign tourists such as Sa Pa, Nha Trang, Mui Ne and Phu Quoc … These places are expected to continue to attract more arrivals of tourists in the coming years.
However, according to Forbes report, investments into Vietnam tourism are only 2% as compared to those of other regional countries such as Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism proposed an amount of 5.25 million USD for investing in the tourism sector and 13 million USD for establishing a fund for tourism promotion.
Aware of this fact, VNAT determined to implement tourism promotion in 2016 through media channels and online marketing to turn the hidden charm of Vietnam into endless beauty and enable tourism to become a key economic sector, contributing 10% of the total GDP of Vietnam. In November, VNAT launched #WhyVietnam – a campaign to promote tourism in Vietnam, which was planned in the government’s national tourism promotion plan. This campaign was co-organised by Vntrip.vn, an emerging tech start-up in Vietnam with the desire to take advantage of available power of more than 90 million people in Vietnam and more than 7 million tourists to join together to spread the beauty of Vietnam on social media.
Vietnam has many simple and beloved scenaries to attract foreign tourists to come and explore.
Inspired by Vietnam’s timeless beauty and underexplored tourism potentials, #WhyVietnam campaign make use of the emergence of social media, modern technology and online marketing channels to promote the most beautiful moments of Vietnam featuring its nature, people, culture and so on to the mass society in and outside Vietnam’s territory.
Foreign visitors took photos to support and join #WhyVietnam campaign.
#WhyVietnam inspires people to share the best photos about Vietnam on social media with the hashtag #WhyVietnam and a caption explaining why they love Vietnam and/or choose Vietnam as their destination. Each photo will not only portray a new angle about the culturally rich yet modern, dynamic and hospitable Vietnam but also represent locals and foreigners’ love for this beautiful country. Moreover, each photo also represents a different welcoming message about the friendliness and hospitality of Vietnam with a view to invite international friends to come and explore this country.
Volunteers of the campaign introduced and promoted #WhyVietnam photo contest to encourage foreign visitors to share and spread the beautiful photos of Vietnam on Facebook.
Upon participation in this photo contest, entrants have the chance of winning a Vietnam overland trip for 2 people worth up to 50 million VND and many return air tickets for domestic flights offered by Vietjet to the winners of the contest.
